Qualifications
Jerry Weitz is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) (Member No. 6070).
He holds a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in urban
studies from Portland State University (1998) and a master
of city planning degree in land use and environmental
planning from Georgia Institute of Technology (1985).
His bachelor’s degree is in
history and political science from Emory University (1983).
Weitz has practiced planning since
1985 including employment in local, regional, and state
government sectors in addition to the private sector.
He served as President of the Georgia Chapter of the
American Planning Association (APA) in 2003-2005; in
2005 the APA Chapter President’s Council awarded
the Georgia Chapter recognition for outstanding service
to its members. Two of the firm’s code projects,
Georgia DCA Model Code (2002) and Forsyth County (2000)
won awards from the Georgia Chapter of APA for outstanding
planning implementation. In 2000, Weitz was awarded a distinguished
professional achievement award from the Georgia Chapter
of APA.
Since 2001 Weitz has served as Editor for Practicing
Planner, AICP’s online member publication
(formerly Planners’ Casebook). In 1999,
Weitz authored Sprawl Busting: State Programs to
Guide Growth (Chicago, Planners Press) and he has
also authored other publications by APA including the Growing
Smart Legislative Guidebook, User Manual (2002).
His vita includes numerous publications, including articles
in leading planning journals. Dr. Weitz has taught planning
and public administration for graduate schools at four
institutions, and he has participated in a number of
panels, conferences, and programs in different parts
of the nation.
